Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. currants or raisins (optional)
  • Crisco or vegetable oil

Directions

    Heat Crisco or oil (2 to 3-inches) to 375°.

    Beat milk, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup oil, eggs, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and 1 cup flour in a large mixing bowl on low speed, scraping sides constantly for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping sides of bowl occasionally for 2 minutes.

    Stir in remaining flour and currants.

    Drop batter by teaspoonfuls into vegetable shortening.

    Turn doughnuts as they rise to the surface. Fry until brown, 2 to 2 1/2 minutes on each side.

    Drain on paper towels.

    Roll doughnuts in powdered sugar.

    For non-sugar users, sprinkle lightly with a sugar substitute.
