- 1 tablespoon butter or 1 tablespoon margarine
- 6 medium tomatoes, peeled and sliced (2 lbs.)
- 4 whole cloves
- 12 teaspoon salt
- 14 teaspoon basil
- 18 teaspoon pepper
- 3 slices firm white bread, toasted and crusts trimmed
- 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon minced onion
Directions

1In saucepan melt butter or margarine.

2Add tomatoes, cloves, salt, basil and pepper.

3Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes.

4Remove and discard cloves.

5Crumble bread; stir into tomatoes with brown sugar and onion.

6Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

7Butter a shallow 1 1/2 quart baking dish.

8Pour in tomatoes.

9Bake 45 minutes.
