  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1 c. plus 2 Tbsp. buttermilk or sour milk

    Beat egg whites.

    Add 1/2 cup sugar and beat until stiff and glossy.

    In another bowl stir shortening and sugar.

    Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.

    Beat 1 minute.

    Fold in egg whites.

    Pour into 2 greased 8-inch layer pans or 9 x 13-inch pan. Bake in a 350° oven about 30 minutes or until done.
