- 3/4 c. butter or part other shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 c. milk or water
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 tsp. baking powder
- 3 c. cake flour
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions

1Cream the butter or shortening thoroughly in a deep bowl. (Have it soft before you start.)

2Add sugar gradually, beating until the mixture is fluffy and light like whipped cream. Add eggs, beaten until light. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately with liquid, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

3Beat thoroughly and add flavoring.

4Bake in layers or flat loaf pan in preheated 375° oven for 30 minutes.

5Makes 2 large squares or 3 layers.
