- 2 c. sifted flour
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 4 tsp. baking powder
- 4 Tbsp. cold shortening
- 1/2 to 2/3 c. milk
- 1 egg, well beaten
- melted butter and sugar
Directions

1Sift dry ingredients together.

2Cut in shortening.

3Add milk to egg and then add to flour mixture, gradually adding more milk if necessary.

4Knead lightly on a floured board.

5Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.

6Cut into wedges and place on greased baking sheet. Brush with butter and sugar on top.

7Bake in hot oven at 400° for 15 minutes.

8Makes 15 (4-inch) scones.
