French Onion Soup

- 4 c. thinly sliced sweet onions
- 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
- 1/4 c. butter
- 5 1/2 c. water
- 1/3 c. dry sherry or white wine
- 8 tsp. beef flavored bouillon
- 6 (3/4 inch thick) slices French bread, buttered and toasted
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
Directions

1In large saucepan, cook onions and garlic in butter until golden brown.

2Add water, sherry and bouillon.

3Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes to blend flavors.

4Place soup in 6 ovenproof soup bowls.

5Top each with bread slices and cheese.

6Broil until cheese melts.

7Serve immediately.
