French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 4 c. thinly sliced sweet onions
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 5 1/2 c. water
  • 1/3 c. dry sherry or white wine
  • 8 tsp. beef flavored bouillon
  • 6 (3/4 inch thick) slices French bread, buttered and toasted
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese

Directions

    In large saucepan, cook onions and garlic in butter until golden brown.

    Add water, sherry and bouillon.

    Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes to blend flavors.

    Place soup in 6 ovenproof soup bowls.

    Top each with bread slices and cheese.

    Broil until cheese melts.

    Serve immediately.
