  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. Karo syrup
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2 1/2 c. flour

    Sift the flour and spices.

    Cream the sugar and Crisco.

    Add the egg.

    Put the 1 teaspoon of soda in boiling water.

    Add the molasses and syrup.

    Add the soda and water alternately with flour. Pour into an 8 x 8-inch greased pan.

    Bake at 325° for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out of the center of cake clean.

    Frost with a light icing or serve with whipped cream.
