- 1 pkg. German sweet chocolate
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 Tbsp. vanilla
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 egg yolks, beaten
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- pinch of salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 4 egg whites, beaten
Directions

1Preheat oven to 350°.

2Melt chocolate in boiling water.

3Add vanilla and salt after chocolate is melted.

4Cream shortening and sugar and beaten egg yolks.

5Add 3/4 cup of buttermilk alternating with sifted flour.

6Dissolve soda in remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk and add to creamed mixture.

7Stir in chocolate.

8Fold in egg whites.

9Bake in three 9-inch pans for 25 to 30 minutes.

10Serves 8.
