- 2 c. sifted flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 to 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/8 tsp. cloves
- 2/3 c. sugar
- 2/3 c. molasses (light or dark)
- 3/4 c. boiling water
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 2 medium eggs
Directions

1Sift together the dry ingredients.

2Cream the shortening and sugar and beat in eggs one at a time.

3Gradually add molasses, beating constantly.

4Blend in dry ingredients using low speed on mixer.

5Add water.

6Mix until smooth.

7Pour into well-greased and floured 8 or 9-inch square pan.

8Bake in moderate oven (350°) for 35 to 45 minutes.
