  • 2 1/2 c. enriched all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 c. margarine
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 c. hot water

    Sift flour once; measure and sift again with salt, soda and spices.

    Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.

    Add beaten egg and molasses; mix well.

    Add dry ingredients and hot water alternately.

    Beat until smooth.

    Start with dry ingredients and end with dry ingredients.

    Pour into well-greased pan (10 x 14-inch).

    Bake in preheated oven at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes.
