Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 12 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 9 cups sifted flour
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons ginger
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon clove
  • 1 12 cups shortening

Directions

    Sift all dry ingredients into a large bowl, cut in shortening with a pastry blender or fork as for pastry.

    Store in refrigerator.

    When ready to use spoon 2 7/8 cups of mix into a bowl, (spoon lightly).

    In another bowl, mix 1 beaten egg, 3/4 cup molasses, and 3/4 cup boiling water.

    Stir wet ingredients into dry, beat until smooth.

    Bake in greased 9-inch square pan for 35 minutes at 325F
