- 1/2 cup Crisco
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons cocoa
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/4 cup red food coloring
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 1/4 cups cake flour
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
Directions

1Sift together salt and flour.

2Make a paste of of coloring and cocoa.

3Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs and then add paste.

4Add buttermilk and flour alternately.

5Blend baking soda and vinegar in cup until it foams.

6Add to the vanilla batter.

7Bake in 3 layer pans, greased and floured.

8Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes.

9Frost with Big Red Cake Frosting!
