  • 4 c. plain corn meal
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. dry yeast
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/2 c. plain flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening

Directions

    Sift all dry ingredients; add buttermilk and mix thoroughly. Melt shortening (or oil).

    Make sure sides of pan are covered lightly with oil.

    Pour remaining oil into corn bread mixture and blend.

    Bake in loaf pans at 375° for 55 minutes.

    Especially good with barbecue.
