Hasselback Apple Crumble

14 ingredients
5 steps

Ingredients

  • For the apples:
  • 1 apple, peeled, halved, and cored
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving
  • For the streusel topping:
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. 2
Make the streusel topping: Add all ingredients in a small bowl and pinch with your fingers to combine. You should have a crumbly dough. You can add more of any of the ingredients to your taste, if you want to.
  3. 3
Slice the apple halves into 1/4-inch slices, leaving about 1/2 inch intact at the top. Squeeze with lemon. Place cut-side-down on a half-sheet pan or in a small baking dish.
  4. 4
Add cinnamon to the melted butter and stir to combine. Brush onto apple halves, trying to get some in between the slices.
  5. 5
Pile/crumble streusel on top of the apples and bake until the apples are very soft and the streusel is golden brown, about 45 minutes; check occasionally and baste with more cinnamon butter if your apples look dry. (You may need to cover the streusel with aluminum foil if it starts to look too brown before the apples reach your desired consistency.) Serve each apple half with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
