Holiday Spiced Wine

Ingredients

  • 1 qt. water
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 4-inch stick cinnamon
  • 6 whole allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. powdered sugar
  • 1 (4/5 qt.) bottle Burgundy or Claret
  • 1 orange rind
  • 1 lemon rind
  • 2 c. orange juice
  • 1 c. lemon juice

Directions

    Combine water, sugar, spices, orange and lemon rinds, in a saucepan.

    Bring to a boil, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved; simmer 10 minutes.

    Remove from heat and let stand 1 hour.

    Strain. Add orange and lemon juice and wine; heat gently.

    Do not boil. Serve hot in pottery mugs or coffee mugs.

    Makes about 2 1/2 quarts.
