Ingredients
- 1 qt. water
- 3 c. sugar
- 12 whole cloves
- 4-inch stick cinnamon
- 6 whole allspice
- 1/2 tsp. powdered sugar
- 1 (4/5 qt.) bottle Burgundy or Claret
- 1 orange rind
- 1 lemon rind
- 2 c. orange juice
- 1 c. lemon juice
Directions

1Combine water, sugar, spices, orange and lemon rinds, in a saucepan.

2Bring to a boil, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved; simmer 10 minutes.

3Remove from heat and let stand 1 hour.

4Strain. Add orange and lemon juice and wine; heat gently.

5Do not boil. Serve hot in pottery mugs or coffee mugs.

6Makes about 2 1/2 quarts.
