Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast (Red Star)
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 2 c. whole milk, scalded
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 6 1/2 to 6 3/4 c. flour

Directions

    Soften yeast in warm water.

    Combine milk, sugar, salt and shortening.

    Add 2 cups flour; stir well.

    Now add softened yeast. Add rest of flour until stiff.

    Knead 8 minutes; let rise until double in large greased bowl, about 1 1/2 hours.

    Keep top of bread greased, then punch down; let rise again until double, about 45 minutes.

    Divide into 2 equal parts; shape into loaves.

    Let rise again until doubled.

    Bake in a 350° oven until done, approximately 30 minutes.
