- 2 sq. Baker's chocolate, grated and reserved
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. shortening
- 1 1/4 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2/3 c. unbeaten egg whites
- 1 c. chopped walnuts
Directions

1Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

2Add shortening, milk and vanilla.

3Beat with electric mixer for 1 1/2 minutes.

4Add egg whites and beat for 1 1/2 minutes.

5Grease and lightly flour 2 (9-inch) spring-form pans.

6Sprinkle bottom of pans with chopped walnuts; spoon 1/4 of batter into pans on top of nuts.

7Sprinkle grated chocolate reserve over batter.

8Pour remaining batter and spread evenly over chocolate layer.

9Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes.
