Ingredients

  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening, melted
  • 3 pkg. dry yeast
  • 3 egg yolks plus 1 whole egg, beaten
  • 5 or 6 c. all-purpose flour

Directions

    Dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in 1/2 cup warm water and set aside.

    Scald milk and let cool to lukewarm, then add sugar, salt, melted shortening, and beaten eggs.

    Mix well, then beat in 3 c. flour.

    Add in yeast mixture and mix well, then add flour in batches to make a soft dough.

    After dough is mixed well, put into lightly greased bowl, turning to grease all sides.

    Place in a warm draft free spot and let rise until double in bulk.

    Make balls of dough and put on greased baking sheet and let rise; then push centers of balls down and fill depression with canned cherry, apricot, pineapple, poppy seed or prune filling. Let rise again and bake in 400° oven until golden brown.

    Remove from baking sheet and cool on a rack.
