Maple Walnut Tarts

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 12 teaspoon salt
- 14 teaspoon baking powder
- 12 cup cold butter or 12 cup hard margarine, cut into pieces
- 13 cup vegetable shortening, at room temperature
- 12 cup ice-cold water (approx.)
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup maple syrup
- 34 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Directions

1TO MAKE PASTRY:.

2In medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.

3Cut in butter or margarine and shortening until mixture is crumbly.

4Add water, 2 tablespoons at a time, mixing with a fork.

5Add a little more water if necessary.

6Press mixture into 2 flat discs.

7Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

8On lightly floured board, roll pastry discs to 1/16 inch.

9Cut into 5-inch circles.

10Roll scraps of dough and cut again.

11Line twelve 3 1/2-inch tart pans with pastry.

12TO MAKE FILLING:.

13Divide Walnuts equally between tart shells.

14Beat together eggs, syrup, brown sugar, melted butter or margarine and vanilla until just blended.

15Pour maple syrup mixture over walnuts.

16Bake in 425F oven for 20-25 minutes, or until pastry is golden and filling is soft set.

17Let stand 15 minutes before removing from tart pans.

18Serve warm or at room temperature, plain or with lightly sweetened cream.
