Ingredients

  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. butter or Crisco
  • 2 1/2 c. white flour
  • 1/3 c. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. sour cream (can put 1 Tbsp. vinegar in milk to sour)
  • 3/4 c. hot water
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 egg whites, beaten (add last and fold in)

    Cream sugar and butter; add egg yolks one at a time and beat well.

    Sift dry ingredients together three times.

    Add alternately with sour cream and water.

    Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in 3 (9-inch) layers about 25 minutes in a 375° oven.
