- 1 c. rolled oats (breakfast oatmeal cereal)
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. melted shortening
- 1 yeast cake or 1 pkg. dry yeast
- 1/2 c. molasses or white or brown sugar
- 5 1/2 c. sifted flour
Directions

1Pour 2 cups boiling water over rolled oats; let sit for 1 hour, then add yeast softened in 1 cup warm water followed by remaining ingredients.

2Add flour gradually, stirring until dough stiffens, then knead until all flour is absorbed.

3Let dough rise in greased bowl until double.

4Punch down.

5Form into loaves.

6Let rise again until double, then bake at 375° until golden brown, approximately 1 hour.

7Remove from pans and cool on rack.
