"Old Fashioned" Dumplings

- 1 small pkg. seasoned (sage, onion, etc.) or unseasoned croutons (3 slices cubed bread can be used)
- 1 c. flour, sifted
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1/2 c. milk or water
Directions

1Put about a quart of water in a deep 2-quart pot.

2Put flour and salt in bowl.

3Beat egg well and add to flour with water or milk; beat well.

4Add croutons to batter and mix well so bread is incorporated.

5Drop in boiling water by tablespoon and stir carefully so dumplings rise to surface.

6Tightly cover and boil 20 minutes.

7When this starts boiling again, turn down flame to boiling over as the steam is important.
