Old Fashioned Rye Bread(Roy Broyd)

Ingredients

  • 2 cakes yeast (can use pkg.)
  • 4 Tbsp. melted shortening
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 qt. lukewarm water
  • 4 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 c. rye flour
  • anise seed (if desired)
  • white flour

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in small amount of lukewarm water.

    Add the water, molasses, sugar, salt, shortening and rye flour to the yeast; beat until bubbly.

    Add enough white flour to make dough stiff enough to knead.

    Knead dough until it springs back.

    Put in greased bowl and set in warm place.

    When double in bulk, knead again and let rise again.

    When light, shape into 4 loaves and rise again.

    Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.
