Ingredients
- 6 tsp. butter
- 6 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 (10 1/2 oz.) cans of condensed beef broth
- 3 c. water
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 5 (1 inch) slices French or Italian bread
- 3/4 lb. Swiss of Gruyer cheese, sliced thin
Directions

1In 4-quart pan over medium heat, melt butter; add onions; cook until tender and golden, stirring occasionally.

2Stir in undiluted beef broth, water, sugar, Worcestershire and salt.

3Over high heat, heat to boiling.

4Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Preheat broiler, place bread on cookie sheet.

5Toast both sides. Add cheese to bread and melt in broiler.

6Put bread on top of bowl of soup.
