  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. sweet milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 egg whites

Directions

    Grease sides of two 8-inch layer pans.

    Line bottom of each pan with waxed paper dusted with flour.

    Sift together flour, sugar, salt and baking powder into a large mixing bowl.

    Add the shortening and 1/2 cup milk; beat 2 minutes on low speed of mixer. Add remaining milk, vanilla and egg whites.

    Beat 2 minutes. Bake in a moderate 375° oven for 25 minutes.
