Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 3/4 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • red, green and yellow food coloring (red only for canes)

Directions

    Cream butter, gradually adding sugar.

    Add egg, vanilla or almond extract.

    Fold in flour with baking powder and salt. Blend to make stiff dough.

    Divide dough in 1/2; leave 1 half plain and divide remaining dough in thirds.

    Tint 1/3 green, one pink

    and one yellow with a few drops of coloring.

    Roll out 1/2 the plain dough to a 10 x 6-inch rectangle on a lightly floured board.

    Shape 1/2 the pink dough into a 10-inch long rope.

    Do the same with 1/2 the green and yellow dough.

    Place each color rope on the long side of rectangle.
