Ingredients
- 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 (7 1/4 oz.) pkg. pitted dates
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. boiling water
- 1/4 c. butter or margarine
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 c. broken pecan meats
Directions

1Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.

2Cut up dates in a mixing bowl.

3Sprinkle soda over them and add boiling water.

4Stir a few times and let stand.

5Cream shortening and sugar; beat in egg.

6Mix in flour, then date mixture and nuts.

7Pour into greased 9-inch square pan and bake at 300° for 1 hour.

8Cool in pan.

9Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

10Makes 9 (3-inch) squares. Freezes well.
