- 1/3 cup molasses
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 1/8 tsp pepper
- 1 beaten egg
Directions

1Mix the butter and molasses in a saucepan and melt over low heat.

2Cool to room temperature.

3Stir together all dry ingredients in a large bowl; set aside.

4Stir the egg into the molasses mixture and gradually stir in the flour mixture.

5Cover and chill one hour or until dough is easy to handle.

6Divide dough into 12 portions. On a lightly floured surface roll each piece into a 10-inch rope. Cut the ropes into 1/2-inch pieces.

7Place the pieces 1/2-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

8Bake at 350 for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned.

9Cool on paper towels.
