Ingredients

  • beets (as many pounds as you are going to make)
  • onions (white or yellow)
  • cane sugar
  • quality vinegar (full 5% acetic acid such as Heinz or another old trusted name. Don't buy a bargain vinegar, the results will not be the same!)

    Trim top and bottom of beets and wash dirt off of them.

    Put beets in a large enough soup pot so they can be covered with water. Bring beets to a boil.
  3. 3
    Boil beets for 60 minutes.
  4. 4
    Pick out one of the biggest beets and cut in half to determine if all of them are well done inside.
  5. 5
    If they are not, boil for another 10 minutes and check again.
  6. 6
    Repeat this process until the beets are done.
