  • 1 long (1 lb.) loaf French bread or 4 long Italian rolls
  • softened butter or margarine
  • 3/4 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 c. grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano leaves
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp. minced onion
  • 1 1/2 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1/4 c. sliced olives (optional)
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices processed cheese

Directions

    Cut bread loaf or rolls in half, lengthwise.

    Spread with butter.

    Combine beef, Parmesan cheese, seasonings, onion, tomato paste and olives.

    Spread mixture on cut slices of bread loaf or rolls.

    Place unwrapped loaves or servings, meat side up, on cookie sheet.

    Top with tomato slices.

    Bake in moderate oven (350°) for 20 minutes.

    Remove from oven.

    Top with cheese slices in between each tomato slice.

    Return to oven until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
