  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. shortening or margarine
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. lemon extract
  • 2 egg yolks (use whites for boiled icing)
  • 1/2 c. nuts (pecans or walnuts)
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 5 Tbsp. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 whole egg
