- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 oz. red food coloring
- 2 tsp. cocoa
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/4 c. cake flour
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. vinegar
Directions

1Cream shortening, sugar and eggs.

2Make a paste of coloring and cocoa.

3Add to shortening and sugar.

4Add buttermilk alternately with sifted flour and salt.

5Add vanilla.

6Add soda to vinegar and then add this to other mixture, blending instead of beating.

7Bake 25 to 30 minutes in two (8 or 9-inch) greased and floured pans in 350° oven.

8Cool and split each layer in two and frost.
