- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 whole eggs
- 1 oz. red food coloring
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 scant tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 2 Tbsp. vanilla
Directions

1Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and cream until well blended.

2Mix food coloring and cocoa together and add to the creamed mixture.

3Sift salt, soda and cake flour.

4Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture.

5Fold, but do not beat.

6Bake in 3 (9-inch) pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
