  • 1/2 cups Shortening
  • 1-1/2 cup Sugar
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 4 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Food Coloring
  • 3 Tablespoons Coffee, Hot And Strong
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 dash Salt (a Pinch Only)
  • 2 cups Minus 2 Tablespoons, Flour, White
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 box Powdered Sugar, 16 Oz (For Icing)
  • 1 stick Butter, Softened (For Icing)
  • 1 teaspoon Red Food Coloring (For Icing)
  • 3 Tablespoons Coffee (For Icing)
  • 3 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder (For Icing)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla (For Icing)

Directions

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    Grease and flour two 8-inch layer cake pans.

    FOR THE CAKE:

    Cream shortening and sugar.

    Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.

    Make a paste of cocoa, food coloring, coffee and baking soda, then add to creamed mixture.

    Add in vanilla and salt.

    Add flour alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

    Bake in two 8 inch, greased and floured pans for 30 minutes.

    Let cake cool completely before icing.

    Cream butter and sugar.

    Mix in remaining ingredients and spread on cooled cake.
