Red "Waldorf Astoria" Cake

  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 oz. cocoa
  • 2 1/4 c. cake flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar

    Preheat oven to 350°.

    Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans; set aside.

    With a mixer, cream Crisco and sugar; add eggs.

    Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa; add to sugar mixture.

    Sift together flour and salt.

    Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture.

    Add vanilla.

    Remove from mixer; sprinkle baking soda and vinegar over top of batter.

    Fold very gently into batter until completely mixed together.

    Bake at 350° for 40 minutes. When cooled, frost with White Fluffy Frosting.
