- 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup chopped raisins
Directions

1Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Dissolve soda in milk; set aside.

2Combine next 5 ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir in raisins.

3Spread batter in a greased and waxed-paper lined 15- x 10- x 1-inch jellyroll pan. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool and cut into 2 1/2- x 1-inch bars.

4Note: Leftover Scotch Hermits may be frozen for later use.
