Ingredients

  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, plus 1 to 2 tablespoons for the topping
  • 1 cup raisins

Directions

  1. 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Arrange the oven rack to the middle row.
  2. 2
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. 3
Add the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt to a large bowl and whisk to blend.
  4. 4
Toss in the butter and cut in using a fork until it looks like little pebbles.
  5. 5
Add in the caraway seeds, 1 1/4 cup buttermilk and the raisins and stir until it looks like a dry biscuit dough.
  6. 6
Knead for 1 minute or so until the dough comes together.
  7. 7
Form into a 7-inch diameter round ball and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. 8
Brush the round with the remaining buttermilk, and then score an X on the top of the round using a sharp knife.
  9. 9
Bake until golden brown and when a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour 10 minutes.
  10. 10
Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
