- 2 pkg. dry yeast
- 2 c. buttermilk
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. shortening
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 5 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 1 1/4 tsp. salt
Directions

1Combine yeast and warm water.

2Let set 5 minutes. Add yeast to buttermilk; set aside.

3Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.

4Add buttermilk mixture, mixing with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough onto floured surface; knead lightly 3 or 4 times.

5Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness.

6Cut biscuits; place on lightly greased cookie sheet; cover and let rise 1 hour.

7Bake at 450° for 10 to 12 minutes.

8Yields about 2 dozen.
