  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 4 eggs (save 2 whites for topping)
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. each cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg
  • 1 c. sour milk with 1 tsp. soda added to milk
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. flour, sifted
  • 1 tsp. baking powder

    Mix all together.

    Pour batter in a 9 x 12-inch baking dish. Spread the beaten egg whites to which was added 1 cup brown sugar. Sprinkle 1 cup chopped nuts on top. Bake for 1 hour at 300°.
