  • 1/2 whole Large Red Onion
  • 32 ounces, fluid Water
  • 32 ounces, fluid Chicken Broth
  • 3 pounds Dry Split Peas
  • 1/3 pounds Ham Steak
  • Black Pepper To Taste

    Begin by chopping the carrots and onions. Saute these vegetables in a little olive oil for a few minutes. Then add the water, broth, split peas, and ham. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a medium heat and allow to cook for 2 1/2 hours. Check on it every 20 to 30 minutes while it is cooking, to stir the soup. Add pepper to taste. Enjoy the soup warm with croutons or toasted bread.
