Ingredients
- 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 1/4 c. margarine or butter, softened
- 1 egg, separated
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. finely chopped nuts
- jelly/jam
Directions

1Heat oven to 350°.

2Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, egg yolk and vanilla.

3Mix in flour and salt until dough holds together.

4Beat egg white slightly.

5Dip each ball of dough into egg white; roll in nuts.

6Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart.

7Press thumb deeply in center of each cookie.

8Bake until light brown, 8 to 9 minutes.

9Immediately remove from cookie sheet and fill thumbprint with jelly or jam.

10Yields about 3 dozen.
