- 1 c. brown sugar
- 1 c. shortening
- 1 c. butter or margarine (butter is better)
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 4 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 1/2 c. chopped nuts
- frosting or jelly (for filling)
Directions

1Mix brown sugar, shortening, butter, egg yolks and vanilla with mixer.

2Mix in flour and salt.

3Shape dough into 1-inch balls.

4Beat egg whites slightly.

5Dip each ball into egg white, then roll in nuts.

6Place 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Press thumb into cookies.

7Bake until light brown, approximately 10 minutes.

8Fill thumbprints with frosting or jelly.
