Ingredients

  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 c. butter or margarine (butter is better)
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • frosting or jelly (for filling)

Directions

    Mix brown sugar, shortening, butter, egg yolks and vanilla with mixer.

    Mix in flour and salt.

    Shape dough into 1-inch balls.

    Beat egg whites slightly.

    Dip each ball into egg white, then roll in nuts.

    Place 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Press thumb into cookies.

    Bake until light brown, approximately 10 minutes.

    Fill thumbprints with frosting or jelly.
