  • 1 loaf Italian bread, cut in 1-inch thick slices
  • 6 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 medium green pepper, diced
  • 1/3 c. chopped onion
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 6 to 8 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 16 oz. Mozzarella cheese, cut into 1 x 2-inch strips

Directions

    In skillet, heat butter, green pepper, onion, sugar, salt, pepper and oregano for about 10 minutes.

    Toast bread at 400° until lightly browned.

    Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

    Place bread in dish, spoon half of mixture over bread.

    Arrange overlapping rows of tomato and cheese over mixture.

    Spoon remaining mixture on top.

    Cover dish with foil and bake at 400° for 10 minutes.

    Uncover and bake 6 minutes longer.
