- 1 qt. drained cooked tomatoes
- 1/2 c. brown sugar or more to taste
- 4 or 5 slices whole wheat bread (pieces)
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. cloves
Directions

1Cook tomatoes and bread slowly (over low or medium heat) for a half to three-quarters hour, stirring frequently.

2Add brown sugar and spices and continue cooking (and stirring) until mixture attains a thick consistency.

3Can be served alone, as a vegetable, or over beans or black-eyed peas.

4Especially appropriate for New Year's Day.
