  • 1 lb. beef shanks or veal bones
  • 1 (14 1/2 oz.) can tomatoes
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 to 3 stalks celery, sliced
  • 1 or 2 medium potatoes, pared and diced
  • 2 or 3 c. water
  • 3 to 4 whole peppercorns
  • 2 to 3 beef bouillon cubes
  • 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen mixed vegetables, peas or lima beans
