  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

    Blend flour, salt, and baking soda.

    Add brown sugar, margarine, eggs and molasses.

    Stir until smooth.

    Blend in oats.

    Roll dough out on floured board, about 1/8 inch thick.

    Cut with 2 1/2 inch round cutter.

    Place half of the rounds on an ungreased cookie sheet.

    To Make Filling: Stir until boiling: 1 cup cut-up pitted dates, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/4 cup water.

    Mixture will be thick.

    Stir in 1/2 cup chopped nuts.

    Cool before using.

    Spread 1 teaspoon filling on center of each cookie.

    Cut a cross in the middle of the remaining rounds.

    Place over filling-topped rounds.

    Press down on the edges to seal.

    Bake 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
