  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 cup onion chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 black cardamom

Directions

    Soak the basmati rice for 10 minutes.

    In a pot over high heat, saute the cumin and onion for 2-3 minutes in oil, or until the onion is translucent. (optional when serving with a meat dish: add peas, cinnamon stick, black cardamom, cloves and black peppercorns.)

    To the pot, add water, the soaked rice and salt. Boil the water and keep the pot uncovered until there is a little water left at the top. Cover the pot and cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
