- 1/2 c. butter or shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. vanilla
- 3 egg whites
- 1/2 c. cocoa
- 1/3 c. cold water
- 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 c. cold water
- 3/4 c. sugar
- 1 1/3 tsp. soda
Directions

1Cream butter or shortening, sugar and salt.

2Blend 1/2 cup cocoa into 1/3 cup water and add to first mixture.

3Add alternately to the mixture the sifted flour, cold water and vanilla.

4Fold in 3 egg whites, beaten stiff with 3/4 cup sugar added.

5Add to cake mixture gradually.

6Add last the soda, mixed in 1 tablespoon boiling water.

7Bake in loaf or layer pans in a 350° oven.
