Ingredients

  • 1 c. dates, cut fine
  • 1 c. hot water
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • several bananas
  • whipped topping

Directions

    Pour water over dates and soda.

    Let stand until cool.

    Add sugar, butter, flour, egg and nuts; mix well.

    Bake like a cake on a greased 11 x 14-inch or larger pan in a 325° oven for about 35 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

    When cool, cut in 1-inch squares.

    Alternate layers of cake, sliced bananas and whipped topping in a large bowl or individual containers.

    Garnish with bananas.

    Assemble near serving time, as bananas quickly discolor and soften.
