- 1 pkg. (1 Tbsp.) active dry yeast
- 2 Tbsp. lukewarm water
- 6 c. all-purpose flour (not self-rising)
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 3 tsp. baking powder
- 4 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. vegetable shortening
- 2 c. buttermilk
- 1 egg
Directions

1Preheat oven to 400°.

2Dissolve yeast in water.

3Sift flour into bowl with other dry ingredients.

4Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse corn meal.

5Lightly beat egg and add with buttermilk to flour mixture.

6Stir until all flour is dampened, then turn out onto lightly floured board or countertop.

7Knead 5 to 10 turns (the less kneading the better).

8Roll out to desired thickness (3/4-inch is good) and cut into biscuits with floured cutter.

9Place in ungreased baking pans or cookie sheet and bake at 400° for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

10Serve hot.
